Leadership Philosophy
I never expected myself to be a leader in college but after having a few leadership experiences I found that not only was I a good leader but I also enjoyed taking leadership positions. In the beginning of my UW experience I thought that a leader had to be forceful, commanding, and even somewhat aggressive. I saw leaders portrayed in films and news as uncompromising and exuding strength, and thought that this must be what effective leaders are like. I never saw myself as an aggressive person and thus never really saw myself as a leader and would sometimes pass up leadership positions. However now that I have had leadership experiences I found that a leader isn’t necessarily any of these things. Instead a leader is someone who is inclusive and understanding of others, as well as direct and open in their communication, and actively working to help others. I first noticed these characteristics in leaders, especially student leaders around campus. However I really understood what these leadership characteristics mean and are after taking leadership roles myself. Working with someone who has these leadership abilities I found to be much more rewarding and effective than someone who is only focused on portraying strength or dominance. I found that I can be a good and effective leader when doing my best to help and communicate with others, as well as being inclusive and making sure everyone’s voice is heard.
